Impulsiveness in William Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet :: Romeo and Juliet Essays

Impulsiveness in Romeo & Juliet         Wisely and slow they stumble that run fast(Pg 91, Line 97) those words spoken by Friar Laurence.  Words we must listen too.  Impulsiveness leads to downfall, and therefore people must strike a balance between being impulsive, and being pragmatic.  Time and cadence again Shakespeare showed us how impulsiveness leads to tragedy.         First off, Capulet was a prudent, well-balanced person most of the time. When Paris told Capulet that he wanted to marry Juliet, Capulet said Let two more summers wither in their pride/Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride(Pg 27, Lines 10-11) because he wanted to look out for Juliet and wanted to make incontestable she was ready.  Though he did tell him to woo her, gentle Paris, get her heart/My will to her consent is but a part because he was still not passing up this opportunity for his daughter.  Capulet was also practical wh en Tybalt spotted Romeo during the Capulet feast, Tybalt wanted to do the impulsive thing and kill Romeo, but Capulet thought for a sec about the consequences.  Tybalt said Ill not endure him and Capulet told him emphatically he shall be endurd(pg. 57, Lines 77 & 78).  In this scene Capulet prevented a huge Montegue and Capulet confrontation by thinking first and not doing the impulsive suggested by Tybalt.  Through thinking these actions through, problems were prevented.         However, Capulet was at times, a very rash person, and that lead to much of the misfortune in this play.  Hours after Romeo killed Tybalt, Capulet acted on haste in Act III, Scene 4 and told Paris I will make a desperate tender/Of my childs screw  I think she will be ruld/In all respects by me nay more, I doubt it not....And bid her, mark you on me, on Wednesday next- and then continued to sound delirious saying Wednesday is too soon/ O Thursday let it be...She shall be married to this noble earl and at this dose Capulet has become selfish and impulsive.  His daughter does not love Paris, but Capulet is not thinking because Tybalt had just died.  When Juliet refused to marry Paris, Capulet exploded, and didnt think at all by revealing Juliet, get thee to

Much Ado About Nothing By Shakespeare Essay -- Papers

Much Ado About Nothing By Shakespeare Shakespeares attitude toward courtship and crunch combines mature suspicion with an awareness that the social realities surrounding courtship may detract from the fun of romance. The need to marry for social superiority and to ensure inheritance, complicates sentimentalist relationships. Although this play is a comedy ending in multiple marriages and is full of witty dialogue making for many comic moments, it also addresses more sincere events, including some that border on tragedy. The personalities of Beatrice and Hero vary greatly, leading them in opposite directions with their relationships, with Beatrice headed towards a good relationship and Hero towards a bad one. The conditions beneath(a) which Beatrices and Heros marriages occur are the effect of their personal beliefs, which relate to their personalities. Beatrices view on the circumstances under which marriage should occur revolve around the fact that authentic love must be present. This is shown when Beatrice says, With a good leg and a good foot, uncle, and money enough in his purse, such a man would take any woman in the world, if I could get her good will. (2.1.14-17) Here, she is saying that a man fucking possess all these qualities, but he can only have a woman is he can get her to love him. Beatrice believes in the dominion of true love because she wants her husband to be firm to her. This is obvious during a conversation between her and her father Antonio Antonio In faith, shes too curst. Beatrice Too curst is more than curst I shall lessen matinee idols sending that way, for it is said, God sends a curst cow short horns but... ..., leading them in opposite directions with their relationships, with Beatrice headed towards a good relationship and Hero towards a bad one. The circumstances under which their marriages occur, their statuses in their relationships, and the ways their relatio nships started all play a significant role in the probable outcomes of their relationships. Beatrices belief in marriage only under the principle of true love, her authoritative status in the relationship, and the plot in which she discovers her true feelings for Benedick all work together to help her have a soften relationship. Heros contrasting beliefs of getting married only in order to uphold family honor, her secondary status in the relationship and her arranged relationship with Claudio lead her in the opposite direction than Beatrice with her relationship.

Affirmative Action In Seattle :: essays research papers

Affirmative Action in SeattlePresent efforts to repeal affirmative litigate argon based on several generalmisconceptions. One is that our society, having reached a point of true equality,no longer needs programs that help government recover and hire qualified women, people of color, and persons with disabilities. Unfortunately, there is abundantevidence -- from Census Bureau data and academic studies, to news accounts andeveryday experiences -- that we still have a long way to go to achieve equalityof opportunity for all social groups.Another misconception is that affirmative action is based on quotas, andthat, as a result, the government is hiring unqualified candidates. This viewfundamentally misrepresents the reality of affirmative action in the city ofSeattle. The Citys affirmative action program does not establish numericalquotas for hiring decisions, nor does it result in the hiring of unqualifiedcandidates on the basis of gender or race. What the City of Seattles affirmativ e action program does is verysimple first, it gives City managers and labour play officers a snapshot of thelabor market, so that they are aware of the availability rates for differentgroups for a wedded job classification. Through these availability rates, theCity can determine whether or not women, people of color, or persons withdisabilities are underrepresented in a given job classification within the domesticateforce second, the Citys affirmative action program encourages managers andpersonnel officers to make special outreach efforts into groups and communitiesthat are underrepresented in our work force, in order to increase the number ofqualified candidates in the potential hiring poolThird, the Citys affirmative action program directs that when there aretwo fully qualified candidates for a given position, preference should be givento the candidate that will make our work force more reflective of the labor pooland the broader community.Still another misconception is that a ffirmative action fosters "reverse distinction" by giving minority candidates an unfair advantage over whitecandidates. However, a recent statewide study of affirmative action practicesconcluded that "whites are the primary beneficiaries of affirmative actionprograms affecting hiring -- this includes large numbers of white men as well aswhite women."It is also important to smell that once the work force of a certain jobclassification within a particular City department reaches the point where itreflects the diversity of the operational labor pool, affirmative action effortsare terminated for those job classifications. Affirmative action is onlyutilized for job classifications where women, people of color, and persons withdisabilities are underrepresented within the work force. This overall approach has served Seattle well. It has provided a

sometimes in each persons life there is a turning point, a point in time when a divine revelation is reaveled to you. If you cannot see this revelation sometimes your vision may be clouded over by a voice that may or may not be your own. In the novel, many people are telling san jose to stop listening tom his own voice and folow them. But he knows that is wrong. At Polemarchus house, Socrates discoursees disused age with Cephalus, Polemarchus aging father. Cephalus says that old age is really not as deadly as people say it is if youre a moderate and contented person, your uprightness makes old age pleasant. Socrates notes that some would say that it is Cephalus wealth that makes old age bearable for him. Cephalus says that this is not true, wealth can help someone be virtuous, just now it isnt the deciding factor. Cephalus defines just behavior as paying ones debts and speaking truthfully, and notes that wealth does help in these things.Socrates questions Cephalus definition of just behavior, but before they can discuss it Cephalus leaves, leaving his argument to Polemarchus. Polemarchus defends his fathers definition, saying that justice is giving each what is owed to him--treating friends well, and enemies badly. Socrates finds numerous problems with this definition. First is that, since people are sometimes mistaken about who their friends are, it appears to endorse treating bad people well and vice versa. Second is that, since injustice breeds injustice, it says that it is the job of the just person to create injustice.Just as Polemarchus agrees that his initial definition is incorrect, Thrasymachus, another leaf node at the house, roars into the conversation he announces, with some pomp, that "justice is nothing other than the advantage of the stronger." In all cities, the rulers enact laws that are in their own stovepipe interests, and these laws are declared just, and so clearly justice is always at the service of the powerful.
